Congressman Erbie A.Fabian yesterday took some time off from his imposing legislative schedule to congratulate newly-crowned National Basketball Association (NBA) champion Miami Heat as the Southbay franchise defeated the Oklahoma City Thunder, 121-106, in the fifth game of a seven-game series.

It was Miami’s second title in franchise history.

A basketball enthusiast, Fabian expressed admiration at the way Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who is half Filipino, handled a star-studded team led by regular season and final’s most valuable player Lebron James.

Spoelstra was a visitor of Zamboanga three summers ago when former United States Ambassador Kristie Kenney brought him here to meet with local basketball aficionados.

“Spoelstra, a Filipino, deserves to be cheered upon and honored just like American Idol runner-up Jessica Sanchez,” Fabian said.

“He (Spoelstra), like Sanchez and boxing great Manny Pacquiao, brings pride and glory to our country,” Fabian added.

Spoelstra started out as a scout for the Miami Heat before being promoted to the front office and eventually as assistant coach to basketball hall of fame Pat Riley. When Riley resigned as head coach to become the Heat’s president, Spoelstra took over as head coach.

Fabian is a promoter and lover of sports, particularly basketball and boxing. “This is a great opportunity for us to be inspired by the feats of great Filipinos involved in the field of sports,” Fabian said. — BJ
