The Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong, Pasonanca will be the center of activities today, as the city government the conduct of a mass tree planting event in celebration of Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga.

The celebration, which is pursuant to Ordinance 281 which also provides for the active participation in the tree planting activities of all sectors, will also be highlighted by the tagging with metal plates of trees declared as century and heritage trees.

Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the tree planting event at the Climaco Freedom Park and the tagging of trees at the R.T. Lim Boulevard area specifically at the Brent Hospital and College, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and the Zamboanga State Polytechnic College.

Multi-sectoral groups to include national and local government agencies, academe, military and police, barangays and other people’s organizations and private institutions are expected to converge at the open state of the Climaco Freedom Park at 7am for the opening program.

Officials from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) will also grace the event, organized by the city government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (OCENR).

Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga forms part of the city government’s continuing advocacy on environmental protection and preservation.

Thousands of trees will be planted by the different sectors and groups in designated areas at the Climaco Freedom Park.

On the other hand, a total of 8 acacia trees will be tagged as century trees and 8 other various trees will be tagged as heritage trees in celebration of arbor day today. Ordinance 341 series of December 11, 2006 declares the preservation of century and heritage trees in the city.

Since 2009 to 2011, a total of 82 trees located in various areas in the city have been tagged and declared as preserved trees. Of the total number, 46 were declared century trees while 36 were declared century trees.

As this developed, Assistant City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Bisquera has enjoined anew all residents of the city to be part of the Arbor Day celebration and help protect the environment and ultimately help give a better future for the new generation.

The Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga is also in line with the Presidential Declaration designating June 25 of every year as nationwide Arbor Day. --Sheila Covarrubias
