Zamboangueños representing multi-sectoral groups yesterday displayed unity in diversity anew, as they flocked to the Climaco Freedom Park in Abong-abong for a common purpose: plant trees and to help protect and preserve the environment.

“This is the most well-attended Arbor Day na Zamboanga celebration”, Mayor Celso Lobregat said in his message before a crowd of over 7,000 people at the open stage in Abong-abong during the program marking Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga.

The crowd consisted of students, policemen, military men, and representatives from national government agencies, local government offices, government-owned and controlled corporations, barangays and various other sectors. They all participated in the massive tree planting activity at designated areas in the Climaco Freedom Park after the program.

Mayor Lobregat expressed joy that the different national government agenices, private sector, organizations of civil society, academe and the community at large are working together with the city government in the effort to preserve and protect the environment.

“We really appreciate the help and support you’re giving to the local government,” the chief executive said stressing that the city government cannot do this environmental program and other programs alone for it cannot adequately address the complex challenges besetting the city.

The Arbor Day na Ciudad de Zamboanga, organized by the City Government through the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (OCENR), is pursuant to Ordinance 281 designating June 25 as the day for the celebration and mandating the active participation of the public in tree planting activities.

Joining the mayor during the program and the tree planting activity were Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde; Councilors Mike Alavar, Lilia Nuno, Eddie Saavedra, Percival Ramos, Nonong Guingona, VP Elago, Myra Paz Abubakar and Luis Biel III; City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr., City Environment and Natural Resources Officer Engr. Rey Gonzales and other department heads; WMSU President Dr. Milabel Ho, ZSCMST President Dr. Milabel Nazario; BGen. Emeraldo Magnaye, AFP of the 530th Air Base Wing, PAF; Rear Admiral Armando de Guzman of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao and numerous other personalities.

The observance of Arbor Day na Ciudad emanated from Proclamation 643 which enjoins “active participation of all government agencies, including government-owned and controlled corporations, private sector, schools, civil society groups and the citizenry in tree planting activity”.

The program was made even more vibrant and energetic with the cheering competition initiated by Mayor Lobregat on the slogan “Adelante Zamboanga”. The ZSCMST contingent won the first prize of P10,000; the WMSU delegation won the second prize of P6,000 while the military-police combined group received P4,000 as third place winner.

After the program and the tree planting event, Mayor Lobregat then led in the tagging of century and heritage trees, mostly located at the RT Lim Boulevard area.
