National Agri-Business Corporation President Honesto F. Baniqued has declared that the days are numbered for  traders buying rubber extract and exploiting as well as controlling the livelihood of rubber tree farmers.

Baniqued together with other officers  — Nemesio Blanco, Ricky Vilarusis, Aleli Manguilin and Kate Zafranco — met last Monday in Ipil with Zamboanga Sibugay Governor Rommel A. Jalosjos,  founder of  RAJ Tripartite Rubber Enhancement and Expansion Program, and officials of Lamitan Agrarian Beneficiaries Cooperative in ipil to discuss the objective of making the province the rubber capital of the country.

Baniqued said that rubber latex traders in the country are deceiving rubber farmers by not telling the latter the real prices.

He said there is shortage of supply of rubber latex in the world market and production in the whole country is not enough to cover the shortage.

“We are here to listen to the farmers tell their predicament and work for solution to the problem. The rubber tree farmers should know that they are the lifeblood of the country. Farming is not a career but a business... Their (farmers’) children aim to have a good education in the country and after graduation they will go to other countries looking for greener pasture. How instead they should nurture and nourish their rubber tree farming. I am here also to study  their situation and how much funding will be allocated for the farmers for their protection and development and the upgrading of their production,” Baniqued said.

Rubber farmers complained to this writer that the Department of Trade and Industry is not protecting them and telling them the real prices of rubber latex. They (DTI) do not also have the data.

Baniqued commended Gov. Jalosjos for helping the farmers upgrade the quality of rubber production  by propagating and promoting RAJTREE with top quality rubber seedlings and providing grown trees for the farmers.

Baniqued assured Jalosjos that he will make a representation with the Department of Agriculture for the assistance of farmers and their benefits including  scholarship for their chlidren. — Allen Abastillas
