A suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed while a provincial board member was injured following an encounter with police in Patikul, Sulu Friday.

Sr. Supt. Antonio Freyra, Sulu police director, said the encounter took place around 10: 30 a.m. at the vicinity of Sitio Bulio, Barangay Kaunayan.

Freyra identified the slain ASG member as Sike Abbas and the wounded provincial board member as Ismunlatip Suhiri, of Sulu’s District 1.

Suhiri sustained minor bruises after his motorcycle crashed while trying to avoid gunfire from the ASG men.

Freyra said that his men, together with Suhiri, were trying to preempt a possible abduction by the group when the latter fired on them.

This triggered a two-minute firefight which left Abbas dead and his fellow bandits running for cover.

The Sulu police chief said that they were still conducting pursuit operations against the ASG men.
