Basilan Gov. Jum Akbar yesterday urged the Basileños to “go out and register” in order for them to exercise their right of suffrage, which is embodied in the Constitution.

Akbar made the call as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is conducting registration of new voters starting today in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), which Basilan province is part of.

The Comelec has set the registration of new voters for 10 days starting today until the 18th of this month of July.

This came about after the Senate and House of Representatives last May annulled the book of voters and to conduct new registration of voters in ARMM in
for the May 2013 synchronized ARMM and national elections.

Akbar said also called on those who had been participating in past elections by way of casting their vote to register anew since only the ones who will register in the 10-day registration period will be able to vote in next year’s mid-term polls.

Akbar said those who want to register could proceed to the Comelec-designated registration centers in their localities.

Akbar advised them to bring pertinent documents like valid identification cards (IDs) when they go out and register.

Akbar said it is important for them to be able to exercise their right of suffrage since it is through elections they have the opportunity to decide and choose their leaders.
