Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday called on residents to help safeguard the process of voter’s registration in the wake of persistent reports of an exodus of out-of-town applicants for registration at the Commission on Elections-City Office.

“Ese deberasan, necesita kita bisya el proceso de registracion hasta na botacion” (that is true, we have to guard the process of registration up to voting time), the mayor said in chabacano, in response to queries from members of the local media, who themselves expressed apprehensions concerning the influx of applicants for voter’s registration from the neighboring province of Zamboanga del Norte.

“Ta pidi gayot yo con todo maga vivientes y votantes de Zamboanga, pabor ayuda bisya, pabor do not be mesmerized by gold”, the mayor appealed. He stressed that monetary considerations should not and should never be the gauge for one’s alliance or support to any group or individual.

The mayor continued: “Please think of the future, think of the present, think of Zamboanga City, we all love Zamboanga City, let us not make sure that the forthcoming elections in Zamboanga are not influenced by the 3 G’s”, without elaborating.

Media reports show that majority of those who have applied for voter’s registration are migrants from the neighboring province. Many of them even made a mistake of proceeding to City Hall or the General Services Office (GSO) at the Baliwasan grandstand for submission of their application for registration. When inquired, the applicants admitted to be natives of Zamboanga del Norte but claimed to have transferred residence to the city the past months.

On the other hand, when asked to comment about the announced line-up of a would-be political party headed by a former Zamboanga del Norte congressman, Mayor Lobregat replied with a wide grin saying the group is fond of flip flopping in its announcements about its line up.

“Ta cambia-cambia man sila, daw elastic. I don’t know, maybe next week there will be another announcement,” he said.

On queries as to when his party, the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP), will announce its line-up, the mayor replied: “Mira tu sila, they made numerous announcements, elastic sila. Kame, we will announce at the proper time, at the right time and we will not confuse the people by saying este dia este el candidato, mañana hinde gale, otro ya gale el candidato”. — Rey Carbonel
