Basilan Gov. Jum Akbar has strongly condemned yesterday the ambush on rubber plantation workers in Basilan province.

Six people, including a militiaman, were killed while 21 others, three of them also militiamen, were injured when they were ambushed around 6 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Sapa Bulak, Sumisip town.

They were aboard a vehicle of the Tumahubong Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Integrated Development Cooperative (TARBIDC) on the way to the work site when suspected Abu Sayyaf bandits ambushed them.

Akbar said ambush on innocent people, especially on lowly-income farmers, are unacceptable in a civilized society.

“Hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit inambush nila ang mga tao na naghahanap buhay ng marangal,” Akbar said.

Akbar meanwhile called on the police and military authorities to relentlessly pursue and arrest the perpetrators to bring them to the bar of justice.
