Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday declared that the appointment of a new City Police Office Chief has yet to be finalized, but hinted that current OIC City Police Director Chief Supt. Mario Yanga will return to his original post as Regional Police Assistant Director for Administration within the month.

The mayor’s clarification doused all speculations and conflicting reports concerning the designation of a new police chief.

“When Gen. Yanga was designated as OIC City Director, it was made clear in our discussions with [Regional Police Director] Gen. [Napoleon] Estilles that Gen. Yanga’s assumption would be on a temporary basis,” Mayor Lobregat told City Hall reporters.

He asserted that Gen.Yanga is overqualified for the position and that the latter is performing functions as OIC City Police Director on top of his other functions and responsibilities as Assistant Police Regional Director for Administration.

“Within this month Gen. Yanga will go back to being the Assistant Regional Director for Administration,” the mayor said. He emphasized that he has been conferring with Police Regional Director  Chief Supt. Napoleon Estilles to determine who will assume the top post at the City Police Office.

The chief executive had earlier expressed preference on Sr. Supt. Angelito Casimiro, the current Chief of the Regional Logistics and Research Development Division at PRO-Cordillera, to occupy the position. However, the latter’s name is not included in the short list of 5 candidates earlier submitted by the Regional Police Office to the mayor due to lack of qualifications.
According to the mayor, Casimiro has recently obtained the required rank for a City Police Director. — Sheila Covarrubias
