“She will now represent the hopes and aspirations of the people of Zamboanga City and the region for progress and better tomorrow through quality education. I know she will be up to the challenge and lead this great institution of learning to yet greater heights.”

Thus were the bold words of District 2 Rep. Erbie A. Fabian on the ascent of Dr. Milabel Enriquez-Ho to the presidency of the largest university in the city, the Western Mindanao State University.

In a speech delivered for the solon in yesterday’s formal investiture ceremonies, Rep. Fabian expressed high hopes the university will move forward anew, now that it finally has a president to lead the school to greater heights in the years ahead.

The solon added, Dr. Ho who is a nurse by profession just like him will have an extra ‘human touch’ to show patience, care, understanding and compassion in dealing with the university’s myriad problems.

Fabian added Dr. Ho brings to the helm of WMSU a wealth of experience from her extensive years in the profession and her postgraduate studies and trainings making her a very capable president.

He enjoined the whole WMSU presidency to rally behind Dr. Ho’s leadership in further reinforcing the schools’ effort at making WMSU one of the city and the region’s top educational institutions.

The 2nd district solon also said it was a relief to have someone ascend to the presidency finally after the impasse it encountered in the bitterly contested battle for the presidency a couple of months ago.

WMSU can finally buckle down to business and focus on its priorities ahead now that classes have already begun.

The city’s first every university was established in 1978 with the signing of Presidential decree 1427 by then President Ferdinand Marcos transforming the then Zamboanga State College into the Western Mindanao State University with the late Dr. Juanito Bruno as its acting president.

In 1986, Dr. Bernabela Ko became the first university president followed by Dr. Erdulfo Fernando in 1991, then Dr. Eldigario Gonzales assumed as the 3rd President of the university, and served the longest until 2007 when Dr. Grace Rebollos took over as the institution’s fourth president.

Fabian called on Dr. Ho, a close friend of the solon to steer the university to even greater heights and vowed all out support to her presidency as a member of the lower house of congress.
