Gunmen spray boat with bullets: 1 dead, 2 hurt PDF Print E-mail

A sea vessel with 400 passengers aboard was sprayed with bullets by gunmen riding on two other seacraft killing one and wounding two others off Calang-Canas in  Maluso, Basilan at dawn yesterday.

Police identified the fatality as Nurhiba Ahamad, 46, married, of Bubuan Island. Wounded were Hadja Patricia Kadil, 46, of Lanawan Island, and Awina Ahamad, all residents of Tabuan-Lasa municipality.

A police report disclosed that the attack happened around 1 a.m.  between Sitio Canas and Tamuk Island while the motor launch was sailing towards Tabuan-Lasa to bring its passengers.

The attackers were armed with M16 and M14 rifles and M203 grenade launcher and were aboard two yellow pump boat.  They opened fire on the boat named Marlboro and owned by Mohamad Nordani, barangay chairman of Canas.

It was learned that most of the 400 passengers were going to Tabuan Lasa to register as voters in connection with the ARMM voters registration.

The attackers sped towards the high seas of Tabuan-Lasa. Thre wounded passengers were brought to a hospital in Basilan. — Noning R. Antonio
