In pursuit of the City’s massive and sustained investment in education, Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday resumed distribution of kiddie chairs and tables to day care centers in the city.

Four day care centers—3 in Arena Blanco and 1 in Mampang were the latest recipients of the kiddie chairs and tables in the continuous distribution of the facilities for the well-being of the children.

Joining Mayor Lobregat in the distribution yesterday were District II Councilor Mike Alavar and City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo, whose office oversees the operation of the 255 day care centers in the city. Also present were Barangay Chairman Mujib Abdulhussin of Arena Blanco, social welfare officers and parents of the children.

Last February 14, the mayor did the rounds of 9 day care centers and distributed 5 kiddie tables and 20 chairs each. These were the day care centers in barangays Divisoria, Guiwan, Boalan, San Roque and Sta. Maria, Putik, Tetuan, Camino Nuevo and Sta. Barbara.

He said the city government had purchased 3,600 kiddie chairs and about 400 tables to be distributed to all daycare centers throughout the city.

“This is our way of showing our love and care to the daycare children,” Lobregat said stressing that the chair and tables form part of his administration’s unwavering commitment to education with the ultimate goal of giving the young generation a better future.

The mayor likewise encouraged all day care center volunteers to utilize the city-published chabacano handbook, “EL Primer Alfabeto Chabacano”, in a bid to preserve Zamboanga’s Spanish derivative language called Chabacano.

In his rounds of the daycare centers, the chief executive indulged the children in questions on primary colors in English and Chabacano, to his delight the children chorused in their answers.

Aside from distributing the kiddie chairs and tables in Arena Blanco, Mayor Lobregat also announced plans to repair the barangay hall and the barangay health center to the delight of the barangay officials and others present during the program marking the coronation of the day care’s King and Queen, a popularity contest held in line with the observance of Nutrition Month.

Barangay chairman Abdulhussin thanked Mayor Lobregat and the City Council through Councilor Alavar for the continuous support to the education sector and to the barangays, as he vowed to reciprocate the generosity by also supporting the Lobregat administration in all its plans and programs. — Sheila Covarrubias
