The city’s pride, Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale won silver and bronze awards in the recently concluded World Choir Games Open Competition held in Cincinnati, Ohio, proving once again its caliber as a world class talent.

Led by choir master Angelita Constantinopla, the all-Zamboangueno choral group received a silver diploma for its outstanding performance in the Mixed Chamber Choirs category with 18.93 points, another silver diploma in the Spiritual category with 12.55 points and a bronze medal in the Musica Contemporanea category with 9.45 points.

In each category, the Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale sang four songs each category including the chabacano song “Cucurucuk Cucudia” that won the nod of the 55 foreign including one Filipino adjudicators. The competition, held from July 4-14, was participated by 64 countries and 27 states from the United States of America.

Mayor Celso Lobregat cited the group’s achievement and took pride in the fact that the Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale bested other more experienced competitors from all over the world.

He said the group’s latest feat brings pride and honor not only to Zamboanga City but the entire country.

The group, upon arrival in Zamboanga Thursday, paid a courtesy call on Mayor Lobregat and happily presented the silver certificates and medal.

Constantinopla said the competition does not offer cash prizes but stressed that what is important is the prestige and the world ranking.  “And the highest honor obtained is participation in the world event.”

The group, she said is deeply grateful to all individuals, private organizations, the Archdiocese of Zamboanga through former Archbishop Romulo Valles and the City Government, most especially to Mayor Lobregat, “who supported us all the way in this endeavor”.

The Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale gave distinct pride to the entire country when it bested 33 other contestants from different countries in the world in the 1st Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition last March 2011 in Quang Nam, Hoi An, Vietnam.

The group’s victory qualified it to compete in the recently concluded World Choir Games in Cincinnati, Ohio and another competition in Riga,Latvia.

Prior to their successful trip in Ohio, the Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale had its Gran Concierto, back to back with the Ateneo de Zamboanga Concert band, last June 22 (Gala Night) at the Garden Orchid Hotel and June 29 (Matinee Show) at the City Coliseum.
