At least 11 people died in an armed clash between Army soldiers and suspected Abu Sayyaf guerrillas in Sumisip, Basilan on Thursday, an official said.

Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz, commander of the Philippine Army’s 1st Infantry Division, said the clash occurred around 7:30 a.m. in Barangay Upper
Cabengbeng and left seven soldiers and 4 Abu Sayyaf terrorists dead.

At least three were reported injured from the government side and two from the Abu Sayyaf.

Cruz said the firefight was still ongoing as of yesterday afternoon.

Basilan was also the site of another blast last July that was allegedly perpetrated by the Abu Sayyaf.
