Top Abu captured in Tawi-Tawi PDF Print E-mail

An Abus Sayyaf founding member was arrested by government forces last Saturday around 8:50 a.m. at Racel Place in Barangay Lamion, Bongao,  Tawi-Tawi.

The Philippine Center on Transnational Crimes Western Mindanao identified the arrested Abu Sayyaf as Ahmadsali Badron Asmad alias Ammad/Hammad Ustadz Idris. His arrest was made on the strength of a warrant under Criminal Case No. 128923 with six counts of kidnapping and serious illegal detention. He was tagged in the 2000 Sipadan kidnapping and the kidnapping of Jehovah’s Witnesses in 2001.

The joint operation on Asmad’s capture was led by the Philippine Center on Transnational Crimes Western Mindanao Field Office and supported by the 84th Special Action Force Company, Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Council, Naval Intelligence Group WM and 9th Regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit in coordination with Sr. Supt. Rodelio Jocson of the Tawi-Tawi Police Provincial Office and the Naval Task Force 62 and 5th Marines Battalion Landing Team.

Asmad is a native of Samak, Talipao, Sulu. He is an Islamic consultant and adviser in Tawi-Tawi. He was under the group of Galib Andang alias Commander Robot, Nadzmie Sabtal alias Global and Radullan Sahiron alias Putol and Umbra Jumdail alias Doc Abu when they kidnapped tourists in Sipadan, Malaysia.

Asmad was also teaching  Islamic extremism and is connected with the Al-Qaeda and ASG-Jemayah Islamia.
