Mayor Celso Lobregat and members of the panel of judges for the Sta. Cruz Island Beach Resort architectural design competition yesterday formally awarded the tilt winners, whose entries will now be the basis for the full implementation of the tourist spot’s development.

In the students’ category, garnering the first prize of P50,000 was the team of May Christine M. Tolomia (team leader) with members Jo Rena Otadoy Inding, Jude Carl Magsayo Arceo, Ernan Sunkip Natividad, Yasser Padilla Anduol and Luke Donald Garcia Cadelina.

Sharif F. Morales and Remlito Tuble de Maria went home with P30,000 cash prize as second place winner while the team of Mark Errol Bosque with Herolene L. Julian, Ralph P. Saavedra and Keila C. Macahis as members reaped the third place and went home with P20,000 cash.

In the professional category, Architect Manolo Tatel of the United Architect Association of the Philippines (UAP)-Zamboanga City chapter was the grand winner with a cash prize of P100,000. He, however failed to attend the awarding ceremonies due to another competition he was participating in another agency.

Efren Jay Tangcalagan of UAP Zamboanga City Chapter and partner Harold P. Generoso shared the cash prize of P60,000 as second place winner while Arch. Noelito B. del Rosario also of UAP-ZC Chapter and Rey O. Cruz shared the P40,000 cash prize as third place winner.

Mayor Lobregat thanked the participants in the competition for their enthusiasm and efforts in helping the city government come up with the appropriate design for the Sta. Cruz Island, one of the only 3 beaches in the world blessed with the pink sand.

According to the mayor, definitely the development of Sta. Cruz Island will start within his term. He met with the Sta. Cruz Island Task Force after the awarding ceremony to review the entries and to adopt all the best architectural concepts and features for implementation soon.

Tourism Regional Director Maryjune Bugante expressed elation that the development of the island will soon start with the conclusion of the design competition.

She happily divulged that the number of visitors to Sta. Cruz Island is getting bigger everyday as it is attracting not only the domestic but foreign tourists.

For her part, United Architect Association of the Philippines-UAP-Zamboanga Chapter president Shiralee Pajarito thanked Mayor Lobregat for giving her group the trust and confidence in co-sponsoring the design contest.

The WMSU Architecture College, meanwhile pledged to continue partnering with the city government in the aspect of implementing projects for the good and interest of the city and its people.

Also present during the awarding ceremony were City Administrator Antonio Orendain, Assistant city Administrator Elmeir Apolinario and other members of the panel of judges. — Sheila Covarrubias
