The Zamboanga City Blood Council formally recognizes today barangay chairmen who have exerted extra efforts to help promote blood services capping the Blood Donors’ Month celebration in the city.

The formal awarding ceremony is set to be held at a local hotel in Valderoza Street at 12 noon today with Mayor Celso Lobregat, City Health Officer Rodelin Agbulos and Philippine Red Cross Zamboanga officials led by chapter administrator Vic Liozo Jr. and board of director Dr. Mila Fernandez leading the rites.

To be recognized are barangay captains who initiated the most number of mobile blood donation (MBD) drives from July 2011 to July 2012.

Topping the list of the barangays that initiated MBDs are Pasonanca, San Jose Gusu, Ayala, Talisayan, Putik, Boalan, Sta. Maria, Labuan, Cawit and Lumayang.

Each awardee will be receiving a certificate of appreciation from the Zamboanga City Blood Council chaired by Mayor Lobregat for the good deeds they have done in helping promote the blood services program.

The data used in the tabulation of the number of MBDs done by the different barangays through the Barangay Blood Councils were obtained from the Philippine Red Cross and the Zamboanga City Medical Center Blood Bank.

Dr. Agbulos has always emphasized that the provision of adequate and safe blood is vital to the effort to achieve key health-related targets like United Nations Millennium Development Goals of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating HIV-AIDS.

The city government and the Zamboanga City Blood Council have been actively recruiting blood donors to help replenish the city’s blood bank and help save lives.
