A 21-year-old woman was seized by gunmen at their residence in Kilometer 26, Manicahan, this city about two hours before a kidnapped head teacher of the Baas Elementary School in Lamitan, Basilan was released Tuesday night.
The woman's grandfather responded to stop the kidnappers from taking her but was shot and killed.
Maricris Cuartocruz y Sogradiel, a nurse, was inside their residence around 7 p.m. when four gunmen broke in and grabbed her. The Cuartocruz family is engaged in rice trading.
Police said that Maricris' mother Elena grabbed the family's 12-gauge shotgun, but apparently didn't know how to fire it. She instead used the shotgun's butt to beat the kidnappers, who wrestled and took possession of the gun, then mauled her.
The incident was reported to Cuartocruz’ grandfather Jesus Sogradiel, 72, a member of the barangay tanod, who was residing some 100 meters away.
Police said that Sogradiel rushed to the Cuartocruz  house after he learned the incident from his grandson Louie Sogradiel. However, while he was along the way, he met the eight gunmen bringing his granddaughter. One of them shot him.
The old Sogradiel sustained a bullet wound in the body and died on the spot.
The kidnappers brought Maricris to the interior of Sitio Busog, Manicahan going to the seashore.
Elena sustained injuries in the mouth, chest and thigh as a result of the beating she received from the kidnappers. She was taken to the hospital by her brother PO2 Arnel Sogradiel.
Government forces led by City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin Deocampo rushed to Manicahan and launched a hot pursuit operation but the kidnappers and their hostage have already left the place.
Police said  the kidnappers may have brought their hostage to Zamboanga Sibugay.
A source said that Maricris' kidnappers belong to the same group who abducted Benjamin Almonte, a retired soldier several months ago.
It was gathered that one of Maricris' relatives was placed under investigation for alleged participation in her kidnapping.
Police said that the Cuartocruz family had been receiving kidnap threats from an unidentified group.
The kidnapping took place hours after Cecilia Sosas, head teacher of the Baas Elementary School, Lamitan, Basilan was freed by suspected Abu Sayyaf kidnappers.
Sosas was seized by gunmen last Nov. 15.
