House Deputy Speaker and District 1 Rep. Beng Climaco has reaffirmed support to initiatives that will propel information and communication technology (ICT) in Zamboanga City.

This, as Cong. Climaco the other day discussed with officials of the Zamboanga ICT Council, the possibilities of helping this industry by laying out the groundwork for concerned agencies and possible investors particularly the Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) to look at Zamboanga City as their next destination hub.

“While it is true, that our city is facing challenges before we could have this realized, we should also  look at the areas workable and check on the availability of resources here in the city,” Climaco said.

The Zamboanga ICT Council chaired by Felix Louell Saavedra is set to conduct an ICT/BPO Conference-Workshop in the city on August 14 where it hopes to benchmark Zamboanga’s capacities to cater to the fast growing industries.

The event will gather together all stakeholders in the ICT-BPO industry including among others – local government representatives, academe (Colleges/Universities, Technical Vocational Institutions, TESDA, CHED, DepEd reps), telecommunications and public utility service providers, relevant provincial government offices, PNP, and of course, private industry.

“It is about time that our graduates need not go to other big cities in Luzon and Visayas. With this, we hope that our graduates will land a job proximate to their families. I am looking forward to this collaboration as this well likewise mean better opportunities for our people,” the congresswoman from District 1 stressed.

The Zamboanga ICT Council is a newly created organization on information and communication technology, organized by the Zamboanga Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (ZCCIFI).  It is affiliated with the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP), and is one with its advocacy for a countrywide development of the ICT industry.

Other Council officers are Michael Kelly Lim- vice chair; Marie Estrellita Antonio-Secretary, Antonio Iturralde- Internal Treasurer and Edwin G. To- external Treasurer.

The Council was established with the following objectives: generate new ICT and BPO businesses in Zamboanga City;  Raise public awareness in Information and Communications Technology, in order to rally industry and civil society in general, to easier adaptation of the benefits of ICT;  foster sustainability and steady generation of resources for the industry and to establish and increase collaboration and public-private partnerships which enhance and foster development in the ICT industry.

Meanwhile, the August 14 ICT/BPO conference will include the introduction/ presentation on Philippine ICT/BPO; briefing on the next wave cities initiative and scorecard; presentation of best practices of other Next Wave Cities and strategic planning workshop. — Marvin Segura
