Two bandits were killed while a third was critically wounded in a clash with government forces in Barangay Tigbanuang, Tungawan, Zamboanga Sibugay last Tuesday morning.

Killed were Absirin Unding and Muksirin Unding. Wounded and captured was Hakkim Balanda. He is now undergoing treatment at a local hospital and is expected to undergo tactical interrogation.

A police report disclosed that Tungawan policemen together with members of Civilian Volunteer Organization led by Barangay Chairman Karim Jalana were patrolling Sitio Mandi in Tigbanuang after receiving a report on the presence of  armed men when they chanced upon a awless group which resulted in an encounter that lasted for 10 minutes. The armed men withdrew towards the hinterland of Tungawan.

Zamboanga Sibugay POlice Provincial Office OIC  Sr. Supt. Jonathan Perez, upon learning of the incident, proceeded to the site with augmentation police force but the armed group managed to escape.

Police recovered two .45 caliber pistols from the slain suspects.

Meanwhile, in connection with the incident, armed men retaliated and attempted to attack a police outpost in Tungawan.

The failed attack was headed by Commander Yacub Iyong, also known as “Bote”.

The attack was reportedly carried out in reaction to the killing and wounding of two of Iyong’s men who figured in an encounter with the government troops.

The encounter lasted for some minutes until the lawless group withdrew. The armed men were responsible for the series of criminalities such as robbery and extortion in Sibugay. — Noning R. Antonio
