Acting on a tip-off from Community Investigative Support volunteers, police and military operatives nabbed a suspected member of the extremist Abu Sayyaf Group Thursday.

Director Samuel D. Pagdilao, Jr., Criminal Investigation and Detection Group chief, said a team of the CIDG, PCTC9 and Intelligence Division of the Air Force arrested Thursday Isnajir Sakkam alias “Abu Fatima.”

Sakkam, a resident of Rio Hondo, was nabbed at 7:30 a.m. at the old public market.

He is wanted for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

Pagdilao said Sakkam was involved in the Golden Harvest Plantation hostage-taking incident in Barangay Tairan, Lantawan, Basilan, on June 11, 2001.

Members of the CIDG’s CIS and two witnesses under the witness protection program identified the suspect as the one under the command of ASG leader Isnilon Hapilon in Basilan.

Sr. Supt. Edgar Danao, RCIDG 9 chief, said Sakkam was still fairly young at that time but was one of those carrying high-powered firearms among the ASG members.

During the incident, the group kidnapped one Zaldy Binasing, 14, and forcibly brought him together with other hostages from one place to another in the remote and mountainous areas of Lantawan, Isabela and Sumisip for four months.
