A barangay councilman (kagawad) became the latest victim of gunslaying in Zamboanga city when he was gunned down along Lobregat Highway in Divisoria yesterday morning.

The fatality was identified as Into Jalali Hamjalul, 42, married, of Buenavista. He sustained bullet wounds in the head and died on the spot.

Some witnesses told DZT that Hamjalul was heading for the city proper aboard his motorcycle when two men aboard another motorcycle chased him and the backrider shot him three times.

A witness who requested anonymity said that Hamjalul slowed down near the children’s crossing in front of the Divisoria Elementary School when gunmen sidled up and the backrider suddenly pulled out a .45 caliber pistol and pumped bullets into his head while they were on motion.

Hamjalul fell on the pavement and was dragged some meters away due to the force of the speed.

The witness said the gunmen sped towards the city proper after seeing Hamjalul crashed on the road.

Policemen recovered spent shells of .45 caliber pistol at the crime scene.

The shooting came more than 24 hours after a former kagawad, his son and nephew were shot dead by gunmen along Gov. Ramos Avenue last Sunday night.

The number of victims of gunslaying in Zamboanga City rose to 115  since January. — Dan Toribio Jr.
