Shocked and saddened at the news of the plane crash involving Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo, Mayor Celso Lobregat said prayers will help the family find comfort and strength in these hours of difficulty.

Lobregat, a close friend of Secretary Robredo, has been eagerly monitoring the situation in Masbate, where search and rescue operations for the Cabinet official and two others continue without let up, since he learned about the unfortunate plane crash.

“Since last night (Saturday) we were eagerly monitoring, not only monitoring, we have been praying a lot for miracle still to happen. We hope Sec. Robredo can be found”, the mayor told media men Sunday.

Lobregat together with Councilors Rudy Lim, Myra Paz Abubakar, Percival Ramos, Nonong Guingona and Eddie Saavedra along with City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo were with Sec. Robredo at the DILG office in Manila, Thursday [August 16] for the turnover of the checks amounting to P10 million representing the city government’s financial assistance to 19 municipalities in Metro Manila and the neighboring areas affected by the recent torrential rains and floods.

“Junto came Thursday y bien bale el su mensaje alla durante el turn over del cheke”, the mayor recounted. On Thursday night, he said, when the twin blasts happened in Zamboanga, he was in touch with the secretary updating about the incident.

On Friday morning, the mayor cut his trip short and returned to Zamboanga to personally look into the situation following the twin blasts. “We were in touch again Friday, updating him about the incident and his scheduled trip to Zamboanga. Aga Sabado, we talked again [over the phone] and he confirmed his trip to Zamboanga and meeting with the Peace and Order Council on Tuesday [August 21]”.

According to the mayor, Sec. Robredo was supposed to fly to Basilan Province this morning [August 21] and pass by Zamboanga City in the afternoon for a meeting with the Peace and Order Council in City Hall.

He said invitations have been sent to the POC members about the meeting with Sec. Robredo “but we have cancelled that because of the unfortunate incident”.

“We are praying, let us all pray”, the mayor appealed, as the search and rescue operations continue in Masbate.

He said Sec. Robredo has contributed a lot to Zamboanga City in terms of programs and projects.  He described the secretary as one of the most efficient and hardworking cabinet member of President Noynoy Aquino.

“We were really shocked at the news of the crash”, he added, hoping that the secretary will be found alive and safe. — Sheila Covarrubias
