Two armed men were killed in a shootout with policemen and barangay tanods, while two persons were caught in the crossfire and wounded in the same incident in Patalon yesterday morning.

Police identified the fatalities as Rolando Bucoy and his brother Rodel Bucoy, both middle name Delos Santos.

Wounded were Reynante Bucoy, 14, and Conrado Bucoy, 23.

Three other gunmen who participated in the shootout with the lawmen managed to escape.

A police report disclosed that men of the Labuan Police Station under the supervision of City Police Director Sr. Supt. James Mejia with some barangay tanods were patrolling the hinterland part of Patalon around 6 a.m. when they spotted a group of armed men.

It was learned that the armed group opened fire on the policemen, who returned fire that triggered a shootout which lasted for several minutes.

DZT gathered that some of the gunmen — later identified as Arnel De Leon, Echin De Leon and Russel Bucoy — withdrew towards the mountain when the two Bucoys were killed. Reynante and Conrado were wounded after they were caught in the crossfire.

After the exchange of fire, policemen recovered a shotgun, a.38 caliber revolver, a boga and a bolo at the shootout site.

Based on information gathered by the police, the gunmen were farmers in the area. Lawmen however were puzzled why they are armed with guns.

Police were still trying to determine the background of the gunmen. They were not discounting the possibility they were involved in some illegal activities. – Dan Toribio Jr.
