Farmers groups can now import rice PDF Print E-mail

Local farmers organizations or cooperatives or local  bidders in the country are now authorized to import rice from other countries.

The import program is under the Private Sector Financed ( PSF ) importation through the National Frood Authority’sTax Expenditure Subsidy ( TES ) signed by  NFA Administrator Angelito T.  Banayo.

Customs Zamboanga City District Collector Abubakar Hamad disclosed that BoC Commissioner Rozzano Rufino S. Biazon has issued Memorandum Circular 151-2012 on July 5,2012 that was sent to his office and published in all BoC districts nationwide providing the list of all  local rice  importers submitted by the National Food Authority to the Bureau of Customs.

The list includes 61 importers from Luzon and 44 importers from Visayas and Mindanao. Out of 44 importers from Visayas and Mindanao, two are from Zamboanga  Peninsula.

Hamad said that under the NFA rice importation program, all the importers should be accredited  with the Cooperative Development  Authority with good standing records.

Hamad explained that under the rice importation program of NFA. farmer organizations, cooperatives or bidders are required to deposit amoney to NFA for the rice importation.

Once the importation is completed, BoC will collect the customs duties payment from the NFA.

Importers will also pay P2 per kilogram or P100 per 50 kilograms of bags of rice. The first  allocation importation was 360,000 metric tons at an international port in Luzon and 240,000  metric tons in Visayas and Mindanao. — Allen Abastillas
