The Basilan Police Provincial Office has filed a case against Elena fishing company for violation of Republic Act No. 8550 otherwise known as the Fishery Law.

Basilan Police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Cristeto Rey Gonzalodo disclosed that a fleet of Elena fishing boats composed of a carrier of fish, a catcher and a skipper was caught and apprehended by the police of Maluso and personnel the Bureau of Fisheries and Maritime Police for alleged illegal fishing within the 15 nautical miles of the municipality waters last week.

Sr. Supt. Gonzalodo quoting a police report from Maluso said that big fishing boats from Zamboanga City and Luzon, when catching fish at night time in Maluso, use big searchlights under water to attract schools of fish and slowly sail outside the 15 nautical miles. This practice was observed and confirmed many times by marginalized fishermen who have complained it to local municipal leaders.

Gonzalodo also said the presence of big fishing boats in the province deprive the marginalized fishermen of good catch.

He also received reports that bigt fishing boats have destroyed the coral reefs of the province’s fishing ground. — Allen Abastillas
