Mayor Celso Lobregat was elected in absentia as Vice President of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino (LDP) during the party convention held in Manila recently.

The convention, held August 17 in Manila, was attended by LDP members from Zamboanga City, less Mayor Lobregat who was then in Zamboanga personally looking into the situation following the twin explosions here the day before (August 16).

As vice president, Lobregat is given the authority to choose candidates for national positions in Mindanao.

The mayor has expressed elation and thanked party members for the trust and confidence given him in electing him to the position.

The LDP, headed by Senator Edgardo J. Angara is expected to coalesce with the Liberal Party in the 2013 elections.

Lobregat has earned the respect of the party leadership for his loyalty to the party as he has maintained his membership all through the years amid numerous challenges and despite pleasing and tempting offers from other parties.

No less than Aurora Congressman Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, son of Senator Angara, in his recent visit to Zamboanga, has publicly acknowledged Lobregat’s fidelity with the LDP even as turncoatism is a common practice during elections in the country.

Lobregat joined the party in 1998 when he ran and got elected as representative of the then Lone District of Zamboanga, succeeding his mother the late Maria Clara Lobregat who was then elected as city mayor. Mrs. Lobregat was also a loyal LDP member and officer.

Records show that the LDP which means struggle or fight of democratic Filipinos, was founded in 1988.

Sen. Angara in a statement after the convention last August 17, said that chances are very high that the LDP will coalesce with the ruling coalition of President Aquino.

He said the president has already selected one of the LDP members, Cong. Sonny Angara as member of his slate, which was one of the agenda discussed during the party convention. — Sheila Covarrubias
