Fifty-four new teachers have been hired by the Local School Board effective September 1st in line with the City Government’s massive and constant assistance and support to the education sector.

Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday morning personally administered the oath of office of the newly-hired teachers, as he urged them to treasure the trust and confidence bestowed on them by the city government through dedicated and committed service to Zamboangueno children.

Having been chosen among the over a hundred applicants, the 54 newly-hired teachers should be model government employees by putting into practice the oath they swore to comply.

He said the 54 newly-hired teachers retain the 80 teacher slots under the Local School Board. Of the 54 hired, 24 are elementary school teachers while 29 are secondary school teachers.

Through Lobregat’s request, Education Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro has granted additional 50 teacher slots for Zamboanga City in reciprocation of the city’s all out support to the DepEd through school buildings and other education-related programs.

Since improving the city’s finances, the LSB has maintained 80 teacher slots. Additional teachers are being hired, as the DepEd absorbs LSB teachers in the national plantilla.

Standing as witnesses to the oath taking rites, held at the City Hall conference room yesterday morning were Councilors Rudy Lim and Myra Paz Abubakar and City Human Resource Management Officer Lina Sanchez.

Lim in his message said Zamboanga City is one of the few cities in the country that grants salaries and benefits to teachers that are at par with those granted by the national government.

Abubakar for her part called on the newly-hired employees to value the oath of office hey have recited and to value their profession as teachers and to be good models to the students. — Sheila Covarrubias
