Mayor Celso Lobregat received the loudest cheers from thousands of students, faculty and administrative officials of the Western Mindanao State University (WMSU) last Sunday when he inspired them during the opening of the University Palaro 2012 at the JFE Memorial Sports Complex in Baliwasan, this city.

In his message, Lobregat vowed to complete the projects for WMSU before his third term will conclude on June 30, 2013. The projects include a three-storey dormitory building and the site development of the University’s open field or plaza which is usually flooded during heavy downpour.

Lobregat also congratulated the WMSU College of Nursing on its success in the recent Licensure Examinations for Nurses where close to 80% of the examinees passed the exam and two landed on the Top 10 (7th and 9th places) nationwide. Likewise, he also cited the WMSU College of Law for producing 19 new lawyers in December last year.

“With these and other academic feats, WMSU has proven once again its role to be the leading institution of higher learning and the Center of Excellence in the region,” Lobregat said, to the rousing cheers of the students.

He also took the opportunity to thank the people of Zamboanga for giving him the rare honor and privilege to serve the city as mayor not only for one term (3 years), not only for two terms (6 years), but three terms (9 years).

“Now that I am about to end my third term, I always ask myself: who will be the next mayor? Not only that I ask, but I fervently hope and pray that the next mayor will have the same love and concern for Zamboanga as my late mother Ma’am Caling had and I have,” Lobregat said.

“It is my fervent hope that the next mayor will stand firmly for the protection of women and children against any and all forms of abuses, and that the next mayor will be a role model that the people can follow,” he concluded. — Vic Larato
