The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA), Port Management Office (PMO) of Zamboanga boasts of robust infrastructure development, with engineering projects costing over Php400 million in 2011 and 2012. Contrary to misinformed reports, the Port of Zamboanga is making significant and substantial progress in facilities maintenance and infrastructure improvement.

Port Manager Leonilo E. Miole discloses that in 2011, six (6) major engineering projects were completed, with the total cost of around Php75 Million.  The projects include the total reconditioning of power transformers, as well as various works like the repair of quay and replacement of damaged rubber dock fender; the repair of damaged roofing at the Passenger Terminal Building –I; the repair of damaged paving blocks at the Container Marshalling Yard; the repair and replacement of stationary lead acid batteries of the Powerhouse; and the repair and replacement of RDF bolts at the fastcraft areas.

Meanwhile, there are three (3) ongoing engineering projects, one (1) completed project, and one (1) major project for bidding this year.   Projects bidden out and due for implementation in 2012 have reached the total cost of over Php143 Million, and these include the repair and renovation of the Passenger Terminal Building-I; the repair and replacement of paving blocks at the open storage area and marshalling yard; the repair of the drainage system; and the repair of damaged curbs, and the pavement and replacement of cylindrical rubber dock fenders. Meanwhile, the paving of the port’s back-up area has been completed in February 17 of this year.

One major project is due for bidding and implementation for the rest of the year, and the project includes the construction of wharf transition; the construction of wharf on deck piles and the construction of two (2) RoRo ramps with breasting dolphins. The invitation to bid for the project was recently published in the Philippine Star, with the Approved Budget for the Contract (ABC) at the cost of Php229, 954,424.90.
The implementing agencies of each project vary, with the Head Office, the District Office and the Port Management Office taking turns in handling the projects.

These engineering projects confirm the dynamism and the strength of the Philippine Ports Authority, Port Management Office of Zamboanga under the leadership of Port Manager Miole. By initiating and implementing various engineering projects that spell progress and development, PPA is truly paving the way for a modern, progressive city port and consequently, for a progressive Zamboanga City. — Karen Kay Rivero, PPA Zamboanga PIO-Designate
