A suspected hired gunman was killed in a shootout with policemen at Faustino Drive, Mampang last Saturday night.

The bullet-proof vest of a police investigator saved him after it absorbed several bullets fired by the gunman.

Killed was Herbert Villanueva y Juela alias Oh-Oh, a resident of Mampang.

Investigation disclosed that men of the Investigation Section led by Sr. Insp. Arlan Delumpines and Sr. Insp. Joseph Lim were conducting follow-up operation at Faustino Drive around 8 p.m. when they encountered Villanueva who was armed with a .45 caliber pistol.

The police had earlier received a report that Villanueva was one of the gunmen who shot and killed Edielwise Kriss Dela Cruz, 30, a real estate broker along Gov. Camins Avenue around 7:40 p.m.last August 15.

It was learned that the police tried to convince Villanueva to surrender but he refused and instead drew his .45 caliber pistol and shot PO2 Had-Anuar Edding hitting his bullet proof vest.

Policemen returned fire trigering a shootout.

Villanueva sustained bullet wounds in the body and died on the spot.

Police were still trying to determine the identities of Villanueva’s cohorts operating in the city. – Dan Toribio Jr.
