CHO bares 47 HIV victims in Zambo PDF Print E-mail

The Reproductive Health and Wellness Center (RHWC) of the Zamboanga City Health Center bared the statistic rate of the increasing number of Human Immunodefiency Virus (HIV) positives in this city.

According to City Health Officer Dr. Rodel Agbulos, from January to December 2009, 17 cases of HIV positives were reported, from January to December 2011, 13 cases were reported, and from June to September of this year CHO confirmed a total of six HIV positives, 11 were reported dead out of the 47 reported cases since 2009.

According to Mr. Jeffrey Somera, Admin Officer of Human Development Empowerment Services Inc. (HDES), there are 4 at risk population of HIV, the male having sex with male or MSM, freelance sex workers, street kids and sex workers. Among the four infected with this virus 34 are from MSM, 2 from female sex workers from Malaysia and 11 others.

HIV is found in the blood and the sexual fluids of an infected person, and in the breast milk of an infected woman. HIV transmission occurs when a suffient of those fluids get into someone else’s bloodstream.

There are various ways how HIV transmit from one person to another: Unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected person, use of injecting drugs, from mother to child, sex workers and men who have sex with men.

HDES sets various of group sessions to educate and share information about the said issues to some barangays in District I and  II. They are also giving flyers and contraceptives like condom and pills. — Wennico S. Escario Jr. and Alvin M. Temonio AB-MassComm (Intern)
