A top official of the Department of Health (DOH) announced that all government-run hospitals in the region will remain on code white alert.

DOH Regional Director Dr. Aristides Tan said the code white alert, which was declared as early as November this year, will remain in time for the New Year's Eve revelry.

Tan explained that code white alert means that the hospitals and its medical staffs with sufficient medical supplies are ready to respond to any emergency that may arise.

Tan's office supervises a total of seven hospitals in the region and three of the hospitals --Zamboanga City Medical Center, Labuan Emergency Hospital and the Mindanao Central Sanitarium-- are located in Zamboanga City.

The DOH regional office covers the provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur and the cities of Dapitan, Dipolog, Isabela, Pagadian and Zamboanga.

Tan said all of the DOH-supervised hospitals in the region have sufficient medical supplies to include anesthesia and anti-tetanus which are the immediate needs to attend to firecracker explosion victims.

He advised the parents not to allow their children to use firecrackers during the New Year's Eve revelry to avoid accidents that may cause injury.

The DOH announced that there were already 120 firecracker-related injuries recorded nationwide.

The use of piccolo and kwitis are among the top two causes of accidents.
