The Abu Sayyaf Group has suffered a major setback and its Zamboanga Peninsula network is believed to have been crippled following the capture of its training camp during a daring and successful rescue operation for a Chinese national at Sitio Dulian, Barangay Calabasa, this city last Thursday morning.

The rescue operation freed Yuan Kai Lin, a mining firm executive, who was kidnapped along with another Chinese national in Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay last June 4.  Five Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed in the gunbattle that ensued when government security forces stormed the training camp and hideout.

Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Napoleon Estilles identified the slain Abu Sayyaf members as Termijie Ajijul, his wife Sitti Raja Salvin, a certain Abu Ulam, Arab-Arab and Banah-Banah.

Yuan Kai Lin was presented to newsmen in a press conference at Camp Batalla yesterday. He was in good health.

Sambri Aslon Kamlon alias Abu Ziad was captured in the same operation. He was tagged as one of those involved in the recent Rural Transit Bus bombing in Guiwan.

Estilles disclosed the operation was carried out by the Anti-Terrorism Task Force Sanglahi which was authorized by Executive secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr.,who chairs the Anti-terrorism Council, Philippine Center on Transnational Crime, 84th Special Action Company of the PNP’s Special Action Force, Anti-kidnapping Group, Police Regional Intelligence Unit 9, Zamboanga City Police Office, Naval Intelligence Security Group-Western Mindanao, 3rd Explosive and Ordnance Disposal unit of the Philippine Army and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission.

During the exchange of gunfire, the government forces saw a Chinese running and screaming the word, “Chinese, Chinese!”. He was later identified as the kidnap victim Yuan Kai Lin.

Authorities said that during the operation, they had no knowledge that Yuan Kai Lin was with the ASG men in the camp. They learned of his presence only when he ran away from the camp and towards the troops surrounding the place.

Recovered from the captured camp  were four high powered firearms and several rounds of ammunition, explosives and personal belongings of the ASG men.

Estilles said the training camp was being headed by ASG sub-leader Khair Mundos, who has a reward of $500,000 on his head.

Police believed that several ASG men including Mundos, who managed to escape,  were wounded in the operation,

Residents told authorities that they saw four ASG gunmen fleeing.

Based on information, authorities learned that the training camp had been existing for more than a month.

Undersecretary Felizardo Serapio Jr., of the Law Enforcement Security Integrated Office who was present during yesterday’s press conference said that latest raid against the terror group exemplifies the government’s unwavering commitment to crush the ASG and put an end to their kidnapping and terrorist activities.

Serapio was authorized by Ochoa to supervise the Sanglahi operation.

Yuan Kai Lin and James Lou, both of the Lilo Mineral Traders and natives of Shenzhen, China were seized by gunmen in their rented house in Poblacion, Kabasalan last June 4.

Luo was released by the kidnappers in Arena Blanco, this city last August 16 allegedly in  exchange of P5,000,000 ransom. – Dan Toribio Jr.
