After September 26, 2012, Zamboanga City economy will rise up, ICT (Information and Communication Technology)-Zamboanga City chair Louell Saavedra declared.
Together with (RITECC Regional Information Technology and Electronic Commerce Committee) -9 Chair Maureen Bello, they are inviting all business sectors, academe institutions, government agencies, and the general public to attend the 2012 Zampen ICT Conference and Trade Exhibit : An ICT Roadshow at the Plaza Astoria of Grand Astoria Hotel. They will find out how they can benefit and how to get involved in this growing multi-dollar industry.

With the theme, “Harnessing ICT for Smarter Countryside,” it will tap the potential of Zamboanga City as the next biggest BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) and IT hub of Mindanao, Saavedra explained, next to Davao City and Cagayan de Oro City. It will be hosted by the Department of Science and Technology – Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO) through the ICT Industry Development Group (IIDG), in partnership with its key stakeholders, the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) and the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NITCP).
The local event is fully supported by the Zamboanga City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation.

While there are many potential talent/employees for the IT-BPO industry in cities outside Metro Manila, the organizers said, that one of the challenges faced by the IT-BPO locators is the negative perception about the industry. The negative perception is due to the lack of proper understanding and knowledge as to the benefit and advantages the IT-BPO industry can offer for those who are involved in it and how its earnings contributes to the local and national coffers, they explained.

Beyond call centers, this event will present to the participants the bigger picture and better opportunities for those who will get involved in the IT-BPO industry. The IT-BPO will increase profits for those who are involved in selling, trading, manufacturing, and processing. It will also benefit those who are in service industry like banking, financing, accounting, real estate, internet, computer, human resources, restaurants, and health services (hospitals/clinics/pharmacy).

Private and public high school and college owners as well school administrators and presidents of PTA (Parents Teacher Association), school counsellors, and student leaders are encouraged to attend and find how to fit their school curriculum to the requirements of the IT-BPO industry.

Media people, are likewise, must attend this event to find out the career opportunities for them in the IT-BPO.

Saavedra believes that the city government of Zamboanga can play a very important part in the advancement of our goals and aspirations, because they can contribute in many areas such as endorsement for the creation of IT Centers and IT Parks, tourism services for visiting foreigners, and of course, address the peace and order concerns.

The government’s enthusiasm and prioritization of ICT initiatives also tend to encourage other stakeholders such as telecommunication companies and academic institutions to upgrade and expand their own services. Lastly, direct involvement and funding may flow in from the coffers of the LGU, such what was shared by the council president of Tacloban where the governor provides scholarships to the tune of 11 Million Pesos annually, to support the development of local talent needed by BPO companies, Saavedra revealed.

The registration is free for the roadshow and the Kapihan Session. The other separate IT-BPO sessionson Sept. 27 and 28 will have a minimal registration to cover food.
