Congressman Erico Basilio “Erbie” A. Fabian is ready to file his certificate of candidacy (CoC) for mayor, squelching rumors that he is inclined to accept an ambassadorial position that has been offered to him by the administration.

Highly-placed sources close to Fabian said that Malacanang, through one of his Liberal Party (LP) leaders in the city, has asked Fabian for his curriculum vitae prior to his appointment.

But Fabian, according to the sources, has politely ignored the request and said that he is bent on filing his CoC for the position of mayor on the first day of the filing period, which is Oct. 1.

Any time this week, the sources said Fabian will meet the members of “Fuerza Zamboanga”, an organization that he founded three years ago, to discuss the probable guest candidates who will be running with him under the Nacionalista Party (NP).

Prominent aspirants in Fabian’s list are Dr. Antonio “Bonging” Feliciano, retired government broadcaster Roseller “Ller” Enriquez, former Indigenous Filipinos Commissioner Miguel “Mike” Apostol, incumbent city Councilor Mel Sadain, Cabaluay barangay chairman Mako Apolinario and a host of respected individuals, some lawyers and businessmen, whose names will be revealed before the filing deadline, the sources said.

The sources said that Fabian is set to meet with Councilor Rommel Agan to try to convince the latter to be his running-mate. Agan is the son of former Mayor Vitaliano Agan.

“This will definitely fortify the line-up (referring to Agan’s entry, if he accepts the offer) and ensure a respectable victory,” the sources said.

It is also bandied around that incumbent Councilor Lilia Nuno, wife of :Liga ng Barangays president Councilor Abdurahman Nuno, is running as Fabian’s guest candidate for congress in the second district and Dr. Cesar Climaco, Jr., the son of the legendary Cesar C. Climaco, as his guest candidate for congress in the first district.

The sources said that Fabian’s complete slate will be known this coming Friday.

Fabian issued a 10-point agenda of government when he declared his candidacy last July 31, the feast day of St. Ignasius de Loyola, in Culianan before a huge cheering crowd that included the urban poor, retired government workers, the middle class, close friends and former high school classmates at the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. — BJ
