LAMITAN CITY, Basilan – Gov. Jum Akbar foresees that there will be an increase in economic activity in this city and in nearby municipalities.

Akbar issued the statement as she, Mayor Roderick Furigay and ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman last Wednesday led the groundbreaking of the port expansion project in this city.

The port expansion project worth P40 million is funded by the government of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Furigay said this city could accommodate more big vessels one the port expansion project is completed.

Furigay said the present capacity of the port of Lamitan is only two vessels at one time.

Hataman said he envisions in making the port of this city as the direct link not only of the province but of ARMM to other major ports in the country.

Akbar said there will be an increase of economic activity once the project is completed since this city serves as the trading centers of nearby towns like Tuburan, Tipo-Tipo, Mohammad Ajul, Akbar, Ungkaya Pukan and Al-Barka.

Akbar said the port expansion project is a welcome development since Lamitan City, with a bigger port, can be a major entry and exit points of goods.

Akbar said the port expansion, once completed, would hasten the shipment of agricultural products such as rubber, coconuts, black pepper and coffee since the port of this city can already accommodate bigger cargo ships.
