City Administrator Antonio Orendain Jr. yesterday announced the winners of city government’s Drum and Lyre Competition for elementary schools Thursday afternoon at Paseo del Mar as Zamboanga gears up for the month-long Fiesta Hermosa Festival in          October.

Orendain, who was the city caretaker in the absence of Mayor Celso Lobregat on Thursday, said 10 public elementary schools participated in the Drum and Lyre completion, marking the culmination of this year’s City Tourism Week celebration from September 21-27.

In his message, Orendain thanked the participants for their enthusiasm and interest. He said despite the distance and the calamity that struck their areas, various schools, specifically the Vitali Elementary School, made a point that they participated in the competition.

Now on its 11th year, the Drum and Lyre competition was dominated by the Sta. Maria Central Elementary School bagging the first prize of P25,000, followed by Zambowood Elementary School in the second place with P20,000 cash prize and Tetuan Central School in the third place with P15,000.

The Best Trainer’s cash prize of P5,000 was awarded to the trainer of Sta. Maria Central Elementary School’s  Drum and Lyre Corps—Reden Alejandria Ariston.  Non-winning schools received P7,500 each as consolation prize.  

Other participants to the drum and lyre tilt were Guiwan Elementary School, Pasonanca Elementary School, Zamboanga West Central School, Boalan Elementary School, Mercedes Central School, Vitali Central School and Lunzuran Elementary School.

The drum and lyre competition was the culminating activity of the Tourism Week Celebration in Zamboanga, Thursday, Sept. 27.

Mayor Celso Lobregat has issued Executive Order No. CL 469-2012 declaring the period September 21-27 as Tourism Week in Zamboanga City with the aim of fostering awareness among the people about the importance of tourism encompassing its social, cultural, political and economic value.

Various activities were held in celebration of the Tourism Week in Zamboanga and these included the Libre Paseo, Ayuda Limpiesa, Zamboanga Food Festival and several others. — Vic Larato
