The Department of Education on Thursday feted Mayor Celso Lobregat in a ceremony held in Manila as a show of gratitude and recognition of his support to public education through various initiatives.

DepEd Secretary Bro. Armin Luistro and Undersecretary for Regional Operations Rizalino Rivera personally presented a hand-made stoneware school house-replica of the Pampanga High School building to Lobregat in recognition of his support by providing 923 classrooms, 892 repairs and maintenance of classrooms, infrastructures, technology support, supplies, locally paid teachers, direct assistance, learning support and other program towards improving the quality of public education in the country.

From 2007 to June 3, 2012, the city government’s list of school buildings and other education-related projects which are completed, ongoing and under bidding process has reached a total of P1.186 billion.

Given recognition along with Mayor Lobregat were other local government chief executives and governors from the 16 regions. Schools superintendents to include Pedro Melchor Natividad of the Zamboanga Division of City Schools was also present.

The ceramic school house gifted to Lobregat is a replica of the Pampanga High School, established in 1908 in San Fernando City, Pampanga in the Escuela Pia in Sorsogon.

In his message, Sec. Luistro said the DEPED has set Thursday, Sept. 27, the 40th day anniversary of the death of DILG Sec. Jesse Robredo, as a thanksgiving and recognition of LGU leaders who exemplify the virtues and values exhibited by the late secretary.

“Ito ay isang araw ng pagsasalamat, this is a token thank you dahil hindi namin mapapalitan ang inyong ginawa”, Luistro said. Prior to joining the government service in 2010, he said, he was of the impression that most if not all of the LGU leaders are not really genuine and sincere in performing their mandates.

“Ngunit sa akin pong pag-ikot, nalaman ko na hindi naman pala na walang pag-asa ang Pilipiinas at sa aking pag-ikot, kilala kop o sa mukha at pangalan ang ating mga mayors at governors na naninilbihan ng taos-puso sa ating mga mamamayan”, the DEPED Secretary said, as he paid tribute to the LGU chief executives to include Mayor Lobregat present during the ceremony.

He said the LGU leaders’ accomplishments in terms of support to education cannot be equalled. “Ito’y pagpapatunay na ang inyong panunungkulan ay nakikita hindi lamang ng Kagawaran ng Edukasyon kundi pati na ng taong-bayan”.

In his message, the secretary also directed all Schools Superintendents present during the event, to prepare a huge tarpaulin recognizing the contributions of the local chief executive in their particular area when they return to their places of origin.

For his part, Usec. Rivera expressed gratitude to the honorees stressing that the DepEd cannot do the job of ensuring quality education to Filipino children without the support and assistance of local partners such as the LGU chief executives.

“Thank You so much for your support and partnership”, Rivera added. — Sheila Covarrubias
