House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao and District 1 Representative Beng Climaco-Salazar yesterday formally filed her certificate of candidacy (COC) for mayor in the 2013 mid-term elections, making her the first few candidates for the position to do so.

Filing their COCs along with Cong. Climaco were her Liberal party mates—Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Board President Elbert “Bong” Atilano and Campo Islam barangay chairman Nadz Sampang—who are both running for councilor in District I and Federation of Barangay Kagawads of Zamboanga (FEBARKAZA) president Arturo “Art” Onrubia and former councilor Roel “Elong” Natividad—who are both running for councilor in District II.

Accompanied by the entire LP-LDP-Adelante Zamboanga coalition candidates led by Mayor Celso Lobregat (LDP), Joemar Lobregat (Adelante Zamboanga) and Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde and a horde of supporters wearing either yellow, red or pink shirts, Climaco proceeded to the local COMELEC office in Baliwasan after attending the 7am mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral in La Purisima and lighting candles at the Fort Pilar shrine.

“We propose, God disposes. Today, together with the Liberal party and the support of the coalition, we manifest our intent to serve the people of Zamboanga,” Climaco said after submitting her COC to the COMELEC said.

From the shrine, the LP-LDP-Adelante Zamboanga coalition team had breakfast at the Paseo  del Mar after which the group kicked off its march to the COMELEC office with a motorcade passing through the main thoroughfares with a matching marching band.

The filing of certificates of candidacy by Cong. Climaco and the other LP candidates came three days after the coalition was firmed up highlighted by the presentation of candidates at Patio Palmeras Sunday amid a huge crowd of supporters and friends and members to include former mayors Vinnie Atilano and Engr. Efren Arañez, former councilor Ricardo Baban Jr., former ZAMCELCO general manager Jun Araneta and other well-meaning individuals coming from the cross-section of the community.

Incumbent Vice Mayor Cesar Iturralde, who have steered the City Council with integrity and transparency the last 3 years, will be Climaco’s party-mate.
Mayor Celso Lobregat, with his unparalleled achievements as chief executive the last 9 years, will gun for the congressional seat in District I in place of Climaco while Joemar Lobregat, a silent supporter and advocate of Zamboanga City’s progress and development will be the coalition’s bet for the District II congressional race.

Council bets for District 1 include incumbent Councilors Myra Paz Abubakar (LDP), Noning Biel (LDP) and Rogelio Valesco Jr. (LDP), Zamboanga City Electric Cooperative Board President Elbert “Bong”Atilano (LP), Campo Islam barangay chairman Nadz Sampang (LP), Zone III barangay chairman Tito Espiritusanto (LDP) and former Councilor Charlie Mariano (LDP). Only one slot is left vacant in the District I line up.

The Council line up for District II are incumbent Councilors Eddie Saavedra (LDP), Mike Alavar (LDP), Percival Ramos (LDP) and Vincent Paul Elago (Adelante Zamboanga) and Federation of Barangay Kagawads President Arturo “Art” Onrubia (LP), former Councilor Roel “Elong”  Natividad (LP), City Social Welfare and Development Officer Francisco Barredo (LDP) and Benjamin “BG” Guingona IV (LDP).

The selection of the candidates for the coalition was a rigid process undertaken jointly by the 3 merging parties—the LP under Climaco, the LDP under Mayor Lobregat and Adelante Zamboanga under Joemar Lobregat.

Iturralde and Biel were not present during the presentation, as they had prior out of town appointments Sunday.

Meanwhile, Mayor Lobregat and the other candidates under the LP-LDP-Adelante coalition will file their certificates of candidacy on Friday, October 5. — Rey Carbonel
