The city’s members of the Federation of Senior Citizens Association of the Philippines (FSCAP) gather for a week of activities aimed to promote public awareness of the rights and well-being of elderly people in a celebration dubbed “Elderly Filipino Week”.

The celebration, held from October 1-7, is themed “Nakatatanda: Sa Bisa ng RA 9994, May Dangal, Nagkakaisa, Buhat at Guminhawa” and organized by the Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA) under the stewardship of Councilor Benjamin Guingona, who is the chairman of the Council committee on elderly and the City Social Welfare Office (CSWDO) under Francisco Barredo in cooperation with the Zamboanga Federation of Senior Citizens Association led by President Corazon Herico.

The Elderly Filipino Week celebration in the city forms part of the Fiesta Hermosa 2012 activities this October in honor of the Nuestra Señora La Virgen del Pilar.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, who graced the opening program at the City Coliseum in Tetuan, Monday (Oct. 1) cited the essential role played by the senior citizens sector to the development and progress of Zamboanga City.

He said the contributions of the senior citizens to the City contributed to what Zamboanga City is at present. He likewise took the opportunity of thanking the senior citizens for their support and cooperation to his administration during the past 9 years he was in office.

Lobregat stressed that the city government gives high priority to the welfare of senior citizens, as manifested in the numerous initiatives that the local administration has undertaken for the benefit and well-being of the sector.

Gracing the opening program, along with Lobregat were Councilors Nonong Guingona, Myra Paz Abubakar, VP Elago and Rudy Lim together with City Social Welfare Officer Francisco Barredo, Joemar Lobregat, BG Guingona, Tito Espiritusanto, Roel Natividad and several other guests.

The Elderly Filipino Week celebration in Zamboanga kicked off with a motorcade in the city’s major thoroughfares starting at 7am followed by the opening program. On October 2, the group had home and warm visits, charity works and field trip/ sight-seeing, on October 3, the members availed of free medical and dental services for during an outreach activity held at the OSCA building in Sta. Barbara.

Yesterday, October 4, the group had a day-long fun, entertainment and surprises during a program held at the Centrl Pastoral in Gov. Camins with special guests Cong. Risa Hontiveros, House Deputy Speaker for Mindanao and District I Representative Beng Climaco and Mayor Lobregat.

The affair was also attended by Councilors Guingona, Lilia Nuño, Percival Ramos and Myra Paz Abubakar together with former councilor Charlie Mariano, FEBARKAZA President Art Onrubia, BG Guingona, Campo Islam chairman Nadz Sampang and former Councilor Roel Natividad among others.

Tomorrow, October 5, all senior citizens associations will have mini-assemblies in their field offices; on Oct. 6 the sector will celebrate the barangay and district field office day while on Oct. 7, the sector will culminate the celebration by sponsoring a thanksgiving mass.

The observance of Elderly Filipino Week is a nationwide activity and is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation 470 to promote public awareness of the rights and well-being of elderly people in the country.— Sheila Covarrubias
