The internationally-acclaimed Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale continues to reap honors, as it was recently included in the Interkultur’s list of top 1,000 choirs from around the world.

Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale, led by choir master Angelita Constantinopla, is one of the only 19 Filipino choirs that made it to the list of Interkultur, an international group that aims to bring together people from different countries through music.

The GMA Network report said the world rankings are based on various categories that included children’s and youth choirs, mixed choirs, female choirs, male choirs, Chamber choirs and vocal ensembles, sacred music, pop, jazz, gospel and folklore.

The report, posted on line yesterday further said that the Interkultur has been holding world-class competitions that have been recognized as the most innovative events in the global choral scene. The contests strictly comply with standards of the “Musica Mundi”, a group dedicated to arranging high calibre musical festivals and custom concert tours for musical ensembles worldwide.

Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale won silver and bronze awards in the recently concluded World Choir Games Open Competition held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The all-Zamboangueño received a silver diploma for its outstanding performance in the Mixed Chamber Choirs category with 18.93 points, another silver diploma in the Spiritual category with 12.55 points and a bronze medal in the Musica Contemporanea category with 9.45 points.

In each category, the Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale sang four songs each category including the chabacano song “Cucurucuk Cucudia” that won the nod of the 55 foreign including one Filipino adjudicators. The competition, held from July 4-14, was participated by 64 countries and 27 states from the United States of America.

Last March 2011, the Zamboanga Hermosa bested 33 other contestants from different countries in the world in the 1st Vietnam International Choir Festival and Competition in Quang Nam, Hoi An, Vietnam.

Prior to their successful trip in Ohio, the Zamboanga Hermosa Chorale had its Gran Concierto, back to back with the Ateneo de Zamboanga Concert band, last June 22 (Gala Night) at the Garden Orchid Hotel and June 29 (Matinee Show) at the City Coliseum. —Sheila Covarrubias
