After serving the people of Zamboanga City and its neighboring cities and provinces for many decades, Philippine Airlines (PAL) made it last flight to Manila last Saturday night, a move that has been described as a marketing strategy of the Lucio Tan group to compete with rival Cebu Pacific of the Gokongwei group.

PAL ceased its operation in Zamboanga City to give way to its sister airline, Airphil Express, to compete with Cebu Pacific Air’s dominance on the low cost travel market in the Philippines.

The oldest airline, called the country’s flag carrier, also ceased operations in other cities in the country except for Cebu, Davao and Cagayan de Oro Cities, which are classified as premium market, for the same reason as competition with Cebu Pacific.

Airphil Express gained significant increase in passengers following its launch as a low-cost carrier competing head on with Cebu Pacific Air. The airline is currently on fleet acquisition modeto support its planned domestic and international route expansion plan. Airphil Express currently holds the no. 3 position among Philippine-based airlines with 19% market share.

Albert Bangayan of the PAL-Zamboanga City Station said airlin’s last flight was made quietly last Saturday night — Zamboanga to Manila and vice versa.

Employees of PAL in Zamboanga City boaded yesterday an Airphil Express flight to Manila where they will given new designations and assignments, according to Bangayan.

Airphil Express, formerly Air Philippines), is a low-cost airline based in Pasay City, The airline was re-branded for a number of times, first as Air Philippines, then as PAL Express. Due to financial losses, Air Philippines ceased operations for a short while until it was acquired by investors from the Lucio Tan group. After the acquisition, the airline was re-launched as PAL Express, to operate some routes and slot assignments of its sister company Philippine Airlines until the management decided to re-brand the carrier as a budget airline now known as Airphil Express.
