Zamboanga City feted with CROWN award in nutrition PDF Print E-mail

Zamboanga City yesterday was formally conferred the national “Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition” (CROWN) award for its exceptional implementation of nutrition programs in Region 9 for 3 consecutive years.

Mayor Celso Lobregat, Councilor Lilia Nuño and City Health Officer Rodel Agbulos led members of the City Nutrition Council in receiving the CROWN award which included a plaque and a cash prize of P250, 000.

The award was conferred by the National Nutrition Council during rites held at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) in Manila with special guests Department of Agriculture Proceso Alcala, Health Secretary Enrique Ona, and National Nutrition Council officials led by Health Assistant Secretary for Nutrition Maria Bernardita Flores and a representative of Secretary Mar Roxas.

From 2009 to 2011, Zamboanga City received the green banner award in recognition of its outstanding implementation of nutrition programs. The city’s score card has been consistently over the 97% record, way above the cut off which is only 90 percent.

Lobregat expressed gratitude to the offices and agencies composing the City Nutrition Council for the efforts exerted to ensure the efficient and effective implementation of the nutrition program.

Lobregat stressed however that the city government is working hard not because of the awards but because it is the mandate and obligation to look after the health and general well-being of the constituents.

Aside from Lobregat, Nuño and Agbulos also present during the awarding rites at the PICC yesterday afternoon were Dr. Ruth Yanga representing the Department of Education-9, Dr. Jam Marbella in charge of nutrition program at the CHO and City Nutritionist Virgie Sagrado.

The members of the City Nutrition Council are the City Social Welfare and Development Office, the City Budget Office, City Agriculturist Office, City Planning and Development Office, City Veterinarian Office, Department of Education-Division of City Schools, Zamboanga City Medical Society, Nutritionists and Dieticians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP)-Zamboanga chapter, AGAPE, Council committee on Health, Liga ng mga Barangay, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG-City Office), ABS-CBN and RMN. — Sheila Covarrubias
