A soldier was killed after he was ambushed by New People’s Army (NPA) rebels late Tuesday afternoon in a remote village in Zamboanga del Sur, military reports said on Wednesday.

Capt. Alberto Caber, spokesman for the army’s 1st Infantry Division, identified the soldier killed in the rebel ambush as Cpl. Anthony Bahala of the 53rd Infantry Battalion (IB).

Caber said that Bahala was on his way back to base on board a motorcycle when he was ambushed by the rebels Tuesday afternoon at the boundaries of Brgy. Bugwak and Dalapan both in Guipos town.

Caber said the attackers, numbering to at least 10 rebels belongs to the NPA’s Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC).

Lt. Col. Victor Tanngawohn Jr., commander of the 53rd IB, said in the report that the soldier was dispatched to the said village to check on the presence of NPA extortion unit in the area.

Tanggawohn said the soldier was able to return fire and hit some of his attackers based on traces of blood seen in the area where the rebels have positioned themselves during the ambush.

Amy and police troops conducted pursuit operations against the rebels behind the ambush, the army official said.
