A habal-habal driver was shot dead by one of two gunmen at Villa Margarita, San Roque last Tuesday afternoon.

Police identified the fatality as Gapul Bengal y Ventura of Talon-Talon. He sustained four gunshot wounds in the body and head and was declared dead on arrival at the Zamboanga City Medical Center.

Initial investigation disclosed that Bengal was driving his habal-habal motorcycle that was negotiating that interior of Villa Margarita, when two men aboard another motorcycle chased him and the backrider fired four shots hitting him.

Although wounded, Bengal managed to drive the motorcycle but collapsed some five meters away from the shooting scene.

Residents rushed him to the hospital while others reported the incident to the Sta. Maria Police Station.

Police said quoted some witnesses to have said that they saw two men riding tandem on a motorcycle one of whom shot Bengal.

Adult residents  in the area refused to give statements to investigators.

Police said that a day before the shooting, Bengal figured in a fistfight with a resident of the said place. That man submitted himself to the police for a paraffin test and was later released.

Police were still working to determine the identities of the killers. -- Dan Toribio Jr.
