DOLE confers award to WMPC PDF Print E-mail

The Alcantara Group’s Western Mindanao Power Corporation (WMPC) power plant in Sangali, Zamboanga City has been conferred the DOLE Secretary’s Award of Distinction during the 8th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) Awards. The awarding will be held at the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) Auditorium in Quezon City on December 5.

The Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) is a national award given every two years by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in recognition of outstanding achievements and best practices of establishments and individuals on safety control and emergency preparedness; industrial hygiene and occupational health programs; environmental protection, community relations and social accountability programs; capability building on occupational safety and health (OSH); OSH management system and international safety rating systems; and OSH indicators and green productivity.

The GKK is a component of the Zero Accident Program, one of the flagship programs of DOLE spearheaded by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC)

Each entry underwent a three-phase selection process. Forms and supporting papers were reviewed by OSHC staff which resulted in a shortlist of companies and individuals. Representatives from OSHC, Regional OSH Networks and DOLE Regional Offices visited the shortlisted entries for an on-site verification of the documents they submitted.

Judges from DOLE, Employers’ Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP), Trade Union of the Philippines and Allied Services (TUPAS) and OSHC determined the winners.
The GKK is part of the DOLE-OSHC efforts to enhance social protection programs - the eighth of the 22-point labor agenda of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

Aside from the 100 l)i4ega watt (MW) WMPC , the Alcantara Group is developing a 100 MW power plant in San Ramon , Talisayan^Zamboanga City that is targeted to be operational by 2016 and a 200 MW power facility in Maasim, Sarangani that will have its first phase operating by 2015. The Group likewise operates the 55 MW Southern Philippines Power Corporation (SPPC) diesel plant in Alabel, Sarangani

The Alcantara Group is in the process of reacquiring the 102 MW Iligan Diesel Plant from the City of Iligan.

The Iligan Plant will be rehabilitated and re-operated in order to help alleviate the current power crisis inMindanao. — PR
