Civic leader Monsi dela Cruz said yesterday that workers in the fishing industry in Zamboanga City must be given opportunities for trainings and alternative livelihood projects during off fishing season  so that they can earn and support their families during this season of jobless.

Dela Cruz revealed that this is actually his plan if given the chance to serve the people as Congress representative in the city’s 1st District.

“Considering that our city is the sardine capital of the Philippines, I shall do everything within my power to provide opportunities for trainings and alternative livelihood projects during off fishing season, thereby  giving hope and ad interim employment to thousands of workers in the fishing industry who otherwise  would be jobless during off season, Dela Cruz told newsmen in an interview.

The government through the Department of Agriculture and Department of Interior and Local Government is declaring every year an off (closed) fishing season for “tamban” (sardinella) for three months during which workers of fishing boats and canning factories producing sardines become jobless.

Dela Cruz said the three-month period is difficult for the thousands of workers to earn no income to sustain the needs of their families, hence he has come up with this idea of providing alternative income generating projects for the workers.

“Many of the (fishing industry) workers send their  children to school and meet other household expenses. Just imagine their situation when they are not earning for three months. We have to do something to help them,” Dela Cruz stressed.

He said this is one of the items in his agenda if elected as House representive of District 1.

The priorities of the former priest turned businessman are: improvement of peace and order; lowering taxes and realistic business incentives; use of government funds to develop the city instead of depositing the money to the advantage of selected few; work for a legislative agenda that would enchance the development and interest of Mindanao, link up with officials and offices of national government to facilitate what ever needs we have, and  provide opportunities for desrving career Zamboanguenos opportunities of recognition, promotion and  affirmation of the talents they have and can share.
