Urban poor groups and homeowners together with women and youth organizations in the city will march the streets today, December 2, kicking off the Urban Poor Solidarity Week (UPSW) with the theme “Adelante Zamboanga! Un sector, un vision, un mision”.

Organized by the city government through the Land Housing and Management Division under the Office of the Mayor, the UPSW walk will start at the Paseo del Mar at 6:30am and will end at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports complex where the opening program will be held.

Mayor Celso Lobregat will spearhead the opening activity along with Councilor Percival Ramos, chairman of the committee on urban poor, non-government organizations and people’s organizations in the City Council, Violeta Alejandro who is the chairperson of the Zamboanga City Homeowners and People’s Organization Federation and Rodrigo Pagotaisidro, chairman of the 2012 USPW oversight committee.

Today’s opening program is expected to be as lively and exciting as ever. It will be highlighted by competitions on vocal solo and modern dance to be participated by the different urban poor, homeowners, women and youth groups.

The weeklong observance is pursuant to proclamation no. 367 declaring December 2-8 of every year as Urban Poor Solidarity Week. After the vivacious opening ceremony today, the organizers have scheduled the holding of a blood letting activity on December 3 at the Red Cross in Pettit Barracks, the UPSW Youth Congress on December 8 from 8am to 3pm at the City Health Office conference room and the UPSW Solidarity and Awards Night on the same day from 4pm to 12 midnight at the Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports complex in Baliwasan.

Under the administration of Mayor Celso Lobregat, the commemoration is vibrantly observed annually with series of activities being lined up. Compared to other cities in the country, only Zamboanga City is treating the affair with vigor and anticipation each year.

This year’s celebration is jointly organized by the Office of the City Mayor through the Housing and Land Management Division, ZC Homeowners and People’s Organizations Federation, Inc., Integrated Muslim-Christian Federation of Zamboanga City, Inc., ZC Homeowners’ and Urban Poor Women’s Organization, Inc., and the ZC Homeowners’ and Urban Poor Youth Organizations, Inc. — Sheila Covarrubias
