To show the city’s gratitude and appreciation for the outstanding showings of Zamboangueño athletes in both international and local competitions, Mayor Celso Lobregat yesterday afternoon handed out cash incentives to 97 medal haulers.

Topping the list of athletes recognized were weightlifters Jeffrey Garcia and Nestor Colonia, who received P60,000 and P40,000 respectively for their splendid achievement in the just-ended 19th Asian Junior and 26th Asian Junior Men Weightlifting held in Myanmar.

Garcia won 2 gold medals and Colonia got 3 silver medals in the said competition.

Lobregat, assisted by City Sports Division Chief Bernardito Patiño and staff from the City Treasurer’s Office, released a total of P342,500 as cash incentives for the medallists that included participants in the international Baseball and Softball competitions, Batang Pinoy-Mindanao leg and weightlifting and wrestling national championships.

Reuben Angeles, Ernesto Binarao, Junifer Piñero and Jonash Ponce—members of the Philippine team that topped the 2012 East Asia Cup Baseball Championship in Thailand recently divided the P60,000 incentive for gold medal at P15,000 each.

Receiving P8,000 each for their silver medal haul in the Asian Men’s Softball Championship were Orlando Binarao, Florante Acuña, Rogelio Rojas, Roberto Iturralde and Joel Binarao for a total of P40,000.

Other recipients of the cash incentives from the City Government were the 77 medal haulers in the recently concluded Batang Pinoy-Mindanao Leg held Dapitan City from November 7-10 where Zamboanga City ranked number one.

Gold medallists received P1,000 each; silver medallists got P700 each while bronze medallists went home with P500 each.

Batang Pinoy is a sports competition for athletes from public and private schools including those out of school youth aged 15 years old and below.

Lobregat congratulated the athletes and thanked them for bringing honor and fame to Zamboanga City.

He added that the cash incentives are being given to boost the morale of the athletes and specially to show the city’s appreciation and gratitude for their splendid performance in their individual sporting events. — Sheila Covarrubias
